As the drivers return to Azerbaijan, last year’s winner, Oscar Piastri, will be looking to repeat his 2024 win which saw him in a race-long battle with Charles Leclerc. It was Piastri’s second F1 win and put his McLaren team in front of Red Bull in the constructors’ championship.
The Baku City Circuit is an anti-clockwise street circuit which is one of the longest laps in the F1 calendar at just over six kilometres and is also one of the fastest. Valtteri Bottas holds the top speed record at Baku, clocking a mighty 378kmh.
There have been five races at Baku with five different pole-sitters and five different winners. Only Nico Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas have managed to convert pole position into a win. Daniel Ricciardo took an unexpected victory in 2017 when he started 10th on the grid.
Sergio Perez holds the record for most podium finishes at Baku, finishing on the podium four times.
At last year’s event, Fernando Alonso set the record for the longest F1 career. Race day in Baku marked 21 years, 3 months, and 8 days since his debut at the Australian Grand Prix in 2001.
Despite being a street circuit, Baku has one of the longest straights coming in at over one kilometre in length. However, drivers are flat out for over two kilometres from turn 16 as they head for the straight.
